Introduction

What if the biggest challenge in mental health today isn’t a lack of services—but a lack of sustainable, well-trained, and truly well counselors?

That question sits at the heart of my work—and it’s the driving force behind my upcoming presentation as a Raimy Fellow with the Jefferson Educational Society.

The Raimy Fellowship brings together local leaders to explore ideas that can strengthen our region through thoughtful, forward-looking solutions. My contribution to that conversation focuses on a growing concern within the counseling field—and a vision for how we respond to it.

It’s also why we are building something bold, long-term, and deeply needed:

The Lake Erie College of Authentic Wellness & Empowerment (LECAWE).

And now, that vision has moved from idea to action.

The Problem We’re Not Talking About Enough

Across the country, the demand for mental health services continues to rise.

But behind the scenes, something else is happening.

We are asking counselors to give more than ever—more presence, more empathy, more stability, more clarity—often while operating in systems that are quietly draining those very things from them.

And at some point, we have to name the truth:

We cannot give what we do not have.

If a counselor is exhausted, overwhelmed, or unsupported, that doesn’t stay contained.

It It shows up in the room.

It shows up in the work.

It shows up in outcomes.

This isn’t about blaming individuals.

It’s about recognizing that many parts of the current system are structured in a way that produces burnout faster than it produces sustainability.

From training environments that overload students…to agencies that demand high output with limited support…to a broader culture that values access over longevity…

We have, in many ways, built a system that depends on people giving what the system itself does not consistently help them develop or maintain.

And that’s not sustainable.

A Return to Wellness—Not Just Treatment

My Raimy Fellowship talk is titled:

“Authentic Wellness & Empowerment: Building Human Capacity That Lasts – Counselor Wellness, Education, and Sustainable Care.”

At its core, this message is simple:

Wellness is not a buzzword—it’s the foundation of effective care.

Through the Authentic Wellness & Empowerment model, we define wellness as having real options across six domains:

  • Physical

  • Intellectual

  • Emotional

  • Social

  • Spiritual

  • Financial

When these areas are underdeveloped, both clients and counselors begin to operate from stress and survival instead of clarity and intention.

If we expect counselors to help others build stable, meaningful lives, then we have to ensure they are supported in building those same capacities themselves. Otherwise, we are asking them to guide others somewhere they have never been given the opportunity to fully go.

And no system built on survival can sustain itself—not in counseling, not in organizations, and not in communities.

Why LECAWE Exists

The Lake Erie College of Authentic Wellness & Empowerment exists because this problem is not going to solve itself.

We don’t just need more counselors.

We need counselors who are:

  • Supported

  • Developed

  • And equipped to sustain the work over time

That requires a shift—not just in content, but in structure.

LECAWE is being built to:

  • Train counselors to develop the capacity they are asked to give

  • Integrate personal wellness with professional competency

  • Create environments where growth is supported, not assumed

  • Prepare professionals not just to enter the field—but to remain and lead within it

Because if we want better outcomes for clients, we have to build better conditions for counselors.

Planting the First Seed

Every meaningful movement begins with a first step.

For LECAWE, that step has already been taken.

We have officially committed the first $5,000 toward building the LECAWE endowment fund—a foundational investment that signals both belief and direction.

This isn’t about the amount alone.

It’s about what it represents.

It represents a shift from vision to execution.

A commitment to building something that lasts.

A foundation that others can build upon.

It’s a commitment to building something different—not just another program, but a system designed to support the very people it depends on.

Endowments are how institutions endure.

They are how ideas outlive individuals.

And now, that process has begun.

A Vision Rooted in Erie—Built for Everywhere

This work begins here.

In Erie.

But the vision is much larger.

We believe Erie can become a place where:

  • Innovation in mental health is cultivated

  • Counselors are trained, supported, and retained

  • Communities are strengthened through authentic wellness

A place where people can truly say:

“It’s all here in Erie.”

And more importantly—

A place where what is built here can ripple outward and impact communities far beyond it.

What We’re Building—Together

The Lake Erie College of Authentic Wellness & Empowerment is part of a larger movement:

  • A growing counseling practice

  • Group-based healing models

  • Retreat experiences

  • Community partnerships

  • A future training institution designed to last for generations

This is not a short-term project.

It is a long-term commitment to building human capacity that lasts.

An Invitation to Authentic Wellness and Empowerment

If this vision resonates with you, there are several ways to be part of it.

You can engage with the ideas by attending or following the Raimy Fellowship presentation.

You can share this message with others who care about mental health, education, and community development.

You can partner with us—as a leader, an organization, or a collaborator.

And if you feel called to support the mission financially, you can help us continue building the foundation of the LECAWE endowment.

Because this work isn’t built alone.

It grows through people who see the need—and choose to be part of the solution.

Closing

The future of counseling will not be shaped by what we maintain—but by what we are willing to build.

At Authentic Wellness & Empowerment, we are choosing to build.

Something real. Something sustainable. Something that lasts.
