Authentic Wellness and Empowerment is building more than a counseling organization. Through Erie Gives 2026, you can help expand accessible mental health services, strengthen the counseling workforce, and move Erie toward a future that includes holistic wellness centers, restorative retreats, and counselor education.
Some organizations begin with a business plan.
Authentic Wellness and Empowerment began with a question:
What would it take to help people become everything they are capable of becoming?
That question has followed me through teaching, counseling, nonprofit leadership, counselor education, and years of trying to understand what genuinely helps people move forward.
Not temporarily.
Not cosmetically.
Not in a way that creates lifelong dependence.
What helps people become stronger, healthier, more connected, more capable, and more empowered?
That question became the foundation of Authentic Wellness and Empowerment.
Today, AWE provides counseling in Erie, Pennsylvania, while developing a much larger vision for community wellness, counselor education, accessible retreats, workforce development, and meaningful personal growth.
On August 11, Erie Gives provides an opportunity to help build that future.

Why Authentic Wellness and Empowerment Exists
Authentic Wellness and Empowerment was created around a simple but demanding belief:
People deserve support that helps them become more capable, not more dependent.
There are moments when people need immediate assistance.
There are crises that require protection, stabilization, treatment, public resources, financial support, or community intervention.
There is nothing empowering about pretending hardship is not real or that every person begins with the same opportunities.
But help should ultimately move people toward greater stability, responsibility, skill, connection, meaning, and freedom.
The goal should not be dependence.
The goal should not be denial.
The goal should not be maintaining the appearance of wellness while problems quietly grow underneath.
The goal should be genuine empowerment.
That means helping people develop the insight, relationships, skills, resources, and confidence necessary to participate more fully in their own lives.
It means encouraging people when they feel discouraged.
Equipping them when they lack the necessary tools.
Empowering them to make meaningful changes for themselves.
That is why the mission of Authentic Wellness and Empowerment can be summarized in three words:
Encourage. Equip. Empower.
Counseling in Erie, Pennsylvania Is at the Heart of Our Mission
Counseling remains at the heart of what we do.
Mental and emotional health affect nearly every part of life.
They shape relationships, communication, physical health, financial decisions, work, parenting, confidence, and the ability to recover from hardship.
At Authentic Wellness and Empowerment, we provide counseling in Erie, Pennsylvania for adults, couples, teenagers, and families.
People may seek counseling because they are experiencing:
Anxiety or depression
Trauma or grief
Relationship conflict
Family stress
Unhealthy coping patterns
Major life transitions
Anger or emotional disconnection
Difficulty communicating
A sense that life is happening to them rather than being shaped by them
Counseling can help people better understand themselves, strengthen relationships, develop practical skills, and create meaningful change.
But genuine wellness is not confined to a counseling office.
The Vision Is Bigger Than Traditional Mental Health Services
A person may improve emotionally while continuing to struggle financially.
A couple may communicate more effectively while neglecting their physical health.
A family may receive excellent counseling but lack access to healthy recreation, meaningful retreats, practical education, or supportive community.
Someone may understand what needs to change but still lack the resources, relationships, confidence, and environment needed to follow through.
That is why the long-term vision for Authentic Wellness and Empowerment reaches beyond traditional mental health services.
We want to create community-centered wellness opportunities that support the whole person.
That includes helping people strengthen:
Mental and emotional well-being
Relationships and communication
Physical fitness and health
Financial knowledge and stability
Personal responsibility and decision-making
Community connection
Purpose, resilience, and meaningful growth
The goal is not to place disconnected programs under one roof.
The goal is to create an environment where different dimensions of wellness reinforce one another.
A person working through anxiety may also benefit from exercise, healthier routines, stronger relationships, community support, and practical financial guidance.
A couple seeking counseling may also benefit from workshops, retreats, parenting support, and opportunities to reconnect outside the pressures of daily life.
A young adult may need more than therapy. That person may also need mentorship, life skills, career encouragement, community, and the belief that a different future is possible.
Authentic wellness is holistic.
Our long-term vision should be too.
Making Wellness and Retreat Experiences More Accessible in Erie, Through Erie Gives -- Authentic Wellness and Empowerment
Retreats, wellness programs, and personal-development experiences can be powerful.
They give people space to step away from everyday pressures, examine their lives, strengthen relationships, learn practical skills, recover, reflect, and reconnect with their values.
But these experiences are often available primarily to people who already have substantial financial resources.
That creates a significant gap.
People in severe crisis may qualify for fully subsidized services.
People with substantial income can often purchase private counseling, wellness memberships, fitness programs, coaching, workshops, and retreats.
But many working people live somewhere in between.
They may earn too much to qualify for assistance but not enough to comfortably pay for every service that could help them thrive.
They delay counseling.
They skip retreats.
They remain isolated.
They postpone their health, relationship, and personal-development needs until those needs become crises.
One of our central goals is to build access for those people.
We want wellness services to be available before someone loses a job, marriage, home, health, or hope for the future.
We want retreats to become meaningful experiences that ordinary individuals, couples, families, helping professionals, and community members can access—not luxuries reserved only for the wealthy.
Prevention, growth, and flourishing should not become available only after a crisis or only to people who can easily afford them.
Expanding Mental Health Access Requires More Counselors
There is another major barrier to accessible mental health services:
There are not enough effective counselors.
Expanding insurance coverage matters.
Reducing financial barriers matters.
Creating community programs matters.
But none of those efforts fully solves the problem when there are not enough well-trained, ethical, and effective professionals available to provide care.
The counseling workforce must grow.
Future counselors need strong academic preparation.
They need practical clinical training.
They need high-quality supervision.
They need support as they transition from graduate education into professional practice.
They need workplaces that allow them to serve clients without becoming overwhelmed, exploited, or burned out.
Communities also need counselors who understand both the complexity of human suffering and the importance of helping people become stronger.
That is part of the long-term vision behind the proposed Lake Erie College of Authentic Wellness and Empowerment.
The Vision for Counselor Education in Erie, PA
The proposed Lake Erie College of Authentic Wellness and Empowerment would prepare future counselors and wellness professionals while connecting education directly with community needs.
The vision is to create counselor education that is:
Academically strong
Clinically practical
Mission-driven
Connected to community service
Focused on both compassion and empowerment
Students would not simply memorize theories.
They would learn how to build therapeutic relationships, make sound clinical decisions, communicate effectively, understand complex systems, support personal responsibility, and help clients create meaningful change.
A college connected to an active nonprofit, counseling center, wellness center, and retreat center could create a powerful cycle:
Future counselors receive excellent training.
Clients gain greater access to services.
Experienced professionals mentor the next generation.
The region develops a larger and stronger behavioral health workforce.
More people receive help before problems become crises.
This is ambitious.
It should be.
Three Pillars of the Authentic Wellness and Empowerment Vision
The long-term vision for Authentic Wellness and Empowerment includes three interconnected pillars.
A Community Wellness Center in Erie
The wellness center would be a community-centered facility supporting:
Mental health
Emotional well-being
Healthy relationships
Physical fitness
Financial wellness
Personal development
Education
Community connection
It would create opportunities for people to strengthen multiple areas of life within one supportive environment.
An Accessible Retreat Center
The retreat center would provide a place where individuals, couples, families, teams, and helping professionals could step away from daily pressures.
They could deepen relationships, learn practical skills, recover, reflect, reconnect, and grow.
The goal would be to make restorative experiences more accessible to people who are often priced out of traditional retreat and wellness opportunities.
The Lake Erie College of Authentic Wellness and Empowerment
The college would prepare effective counselors and wellness professionals while expanding the workforce available to serve Erie and the surrounding region.
These are not three unrelated dreams.
They are parts of one system.
The wellness center would serve people directly.
The retreat center would create space for deeper renewal and development.
The college would prepare the professionals needed to sustain and expand the work.
Together, they could help Erie become known not only for responding to mental illness, but also for actively promoting wellness, flourishing, healthy relationships, strong communities, and human potential.

Why Erie Gives 2026 Matters to This Vision
Large visions do not become real through ideas alone.
They require people, partnerships, expertise, infrastructure, time, and financial resources.
Erie Gives allows people throughout our region to invest in nonprofit organizations working to make our community stronger.
For Authentic Wellness and Empowerment, Erie Gives is more than a fundraising date.
It is an invitation.
An invitation to support accessible counseling.
An invitation to invest in stronger individuals, couples, families, and communities.
An invitation to help expand the mental health workforce in Erie.
An invitation to make wellness, personal development, and restorative experiences accessible to people who are too often caught between complete subsidy and comfortable affordability.
An invitation to help build a wellness center, a retreat center, and eventually the Lake Erie College of Authentic Wellness and Empowerment.
We are building carefully.
We are building practically.
But we are also willing to dream boldly.
Erie does not need another organization that simply maintains the status quo.
It needs people and institutions willing to create new pathways toward health, responsibility, purpose, connection, and flourishing.
Why Community Partnerships Matter
No meaningful vision becomes reality through one person’s abilities alone.
My greatest gifts remain counseling and teaching.
I can sit with people in difficult moments.
I can make complex ideas understandable.
I can recognize patterns, imagine possibilities, and communicate a vision for what could exist.
But building Authentic Wellness and Empowerment requires many different gifts.
It requires:
Counselors
Administrators
Educators
Donors
Volunteers
Organizers
Community partners
Business leaders
Advocates
Fitness professionals
Financial educators
Students
Marketing and technology professionals
People willing to share their relationships and expertise
It requires people who believe Erie can become healthier.
It requires people who believe mental health services should be both effective and accessible.
It requires people who believe individuals can show themselves compassion without abandoning responsibility.
It requires people who believe systems should facilitate flourishing rather than merely manage crisis.
It requires people who recognize that their contribution—whether time, expertise, relationships, referrals, encouragement, or money—can become part of something larger.

Help Us Build What Erie Needs Next
Authentic Wellness and Empowerment began with a desire to understand what keeps people from becoming everything they could be.
It has grown into a nonprofit counseling organization.
But the larger vision is still unfolding.
We want to help people move beyond crisis management.
We want to create access before hardship becomes catastrophe.
We want to strengthen relationships, bodies, finances, communities, and lives.
We want to develop effective counselors.
We want to create spaces where ordinary people can experience meaningful growth, renewal, support, and connection.
We want to build systems that help people help themselves.
This cannot be accomplished by one counselor, teacher, donor, or organization.
It will require a community.
On August 11, you can become part of that community by supporting Authentic Wellness and Empowerment through Erie Gives.
You can also contribute by seeking counseling, joining our team, volunteering your gifts, collaborating with us, referring someone who needs support, or sharing our vision with others.
We are not simply trying to help people feel better for a moment.
We are working to help people live better, relate better, grow stronger, and become more capable of creating lives that truly flourish.
That is authentic wellness.
That is genuine empowerment.
And that is the future we hope to build in Erie.
